Zaterdag Markt (Saturday Market) in Eindhoven

One of my favorite things about living in The Netherlands is the sheer crazy amount of markets that are here. Being in a larger city, there's a market of some sort somewhere in the city everyday except Sunday. Many smaller cities and towns have their markt (market) one day a week. I took some shots a few months ago of the zaterdag (Saturday) market here in Eindhoven.

This is the bicycle parts stall. We usually check for bike parts first since they're generally a little bit cheaper.

There are tons of fruit and veggie stalls. The selection at supermarkets isn't that great sometimes so if you need something slightly out of the ordinary (like an ORANGE sweet potato for instance), the market is usually a good place to check.

Here's an olive stand with more sorts and flavors of olives than I even knew existed.

There are a couple of stalls with fabric and haberdashery. The very best place to search for this stuff though is at the stoffenmarkt (fabric market) on Tuesday.

Can't forget the cheese now, can we?

And what Dutch market would be complete without flowers?

There are of course tons of other sorts of stalls: clothing, bread, snoepjes (sweets & candies), fish, poultry and so on. If you're really lucky your local market will have someone making hot fresh stroopwafels!

I love these pictures : ) They are fantastic! What a wonderful thing. There aren't too many markets like this around in the states and that is sad. I think it is so nice when people can get out into the community and really get to know one another! Super great post. Lovely to visit!

Thanks for sharing your city! I love visiting markets like these, lots of unique crafts and awesome food! I'd love to go through the fabric... how much do they sell for?

These pictures are awesome! I've never been to a market in a city. Closest thing for me--the flea market in a field-type-thing. I'd love to go to one though. Thanks for sharing!

While shopping for various ingredients for our Thanksgiving celebration last year, I bought some sweet potatoes at our big outdoor market. It was the first time I'd bought any sweet potatoes here in the Netherlands. Boy was I surprised when I cut it open after roasting it and realized it was not orange! It still tasted good, though, so it wasn't a problem, and my Dutch guests didn't know any better. ;)

I'm completely jealous! We don't have awesome markets like this where I live, but if we did, I'd be there all the time.

Hope you had a great holiday!
